The Waterton climbs were postponed due to an earlyseason storm that dumped snow at higher elevations. Sofa Mountain was the only scheduled climb that could be done safely. We headed out toward Sofa from the Chief Mountain highway on a beautiful, sunny, fall day. The upper half of the north face of Sofa was cloaked in a fresh coat of snow and a lot of snow remained from the previous week's big storm. The normal and most direct route from the Crooked Creek Basin was too hazardous in these conditions. We elected to climb a north-facing serrated limestone ridge that involved Class 4 climbing up snow and solid limestone. It proved to be a challenging and enjoyable climb, and topped out on a broad summit ridge. There was no haze on this crisp fall day and from the top we could see deep into Glacier Park with great views of nearby Cleveland, Miche Wabun, Chief and Kaina. We also spotted Kintla, Vulture, Rainbow and Carter in the distance. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
