On Monday, July 21, eight GMS folks climbed Matahpi Peak. The route climbed was a new route which ascended the west couloir. We departed the Piegan Pass trail a short distance before crossing the stream exiting Preston Park to access this couloir. The route up the couloir was great with solid footing and little exposure. At the upper end of the couloir, we traversed a short distance to the west ridge to continue the climb. Once the cliffs near the peak were reached, we hiked a goat trail around the mountain to the east and followed the usual route up to the summit. All those hiking enjoyed the route as it avoided the loose scree of the usual route. However, the scree was appreciated as we made a quick descent from the saddle between Matahpi and Going to the Sun Peaks. Those who had previously climbed Matahpi concluded that this was the preferred route for future climbs. It was a fun day for all. Those participating were Rick Murphy, Austin Lindsay, Brian Pintor, Del and Gail Meuchel, Lou Herrit, Rick Fopp, and coordinator Darrel Coverdell Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
