Weather, more specifically wind, prevented us from accomplishing our ambitious summit plans for the weekend. On Friday, Dean Stensland, Denise and I summited Cave Mountain but were promptly chased off the summit by rain squalls. It is unfortunate that the goat skull that was on the summit during my previous visits was gone. We arrived at the campground before noon and headed out at 1:30 pm. This quick half day hike had us back at camp by 7:00 pm. On Saturday we were joined by David and Stacey Endebrock, and Alice Ford and Jer Lundgren for an attempt on Ear Mountain. Our route was what I will call the normal route; up the east face to the base of the summit cliffs followed by a high ledge traverse to the west face. At the start of the ledge traverse the tenacious winds were blowing us off our feet and caused us to huddle under a small ledge. Alice got hit in the forehead by a flying rock. We all agreed that it was too dangerous to continue so we saved the summit for another day. The weather did not improve on Sunday. Ken McDermott, Dean and I did make it to Headquarters Creek Pass. We had to scramble up the final headwall below the pass due to lingering winter snow. Another wonderful weekend on the front with a great group of GMS’ers.
