Write Up:
At 7:30 the morning of the climb, 11 chipper climbers started up the trail which led to Little St. Joe and St. Joseph, the goal for the day. We all knew it was going to be a scorcher so we gritted our teeth and got through the steepest and hottest portion of the trail during the cooler morning hours. We grunted up the 2.8 miles and 3062 feet of elevation gain to reach the 9033' summit of Little St. Joe. We were treated to nice views, a brief rest and the first sight of our main objective, St. Joseph peak. We then made our way over a broken ridge line, losing elevation in the process, to the main peak. We all pitched in to find the route to the summit as this was the exploratory portion of the climb. On the 9587' summit we were treated to gorgeous views, a lunch break and good conversation. For the way down we split into two groups, one group descending the way we came up and the other taking a more exciting way down. After 11 hours, 9.7 miles and 5047' feet of elevation gain, the group was treated to a well-deserved and delicious tailgate party. It was an excellent day with an excellent group.
