Sunday August 17th dawned partly cloudy as a week of heavy showers was ending in the Pintlar Range. Joining Gail and Dell Meuchel on Saturday evening for dinner at a Maxville area cabin were Greg and Cecelia Notess and Larry Hiller. The beverages cold and the meal excellent. The next morning we would hook up with Ken McDermott and proceed to the trail head on the Middle Fork of Rock Creek by Moose Lake. This adventure was a typical GMS mix of trail, rock, talus, and a modest bushwhack. The first five miles involved a wooded trail to Edith Lake. A beautiful glacial tarn and a gain of 1500 feet. The last mile on unstable rock and talus would climb nearly 3000 additional feet to the summit. The group worked well together as we ventured up the steep summit slope. Larry suggested an alternate route for the return as none of us were anxious to fight the talus back down. Moving further north west the slope was less sever and the talus areas disappeared much more quickly. Greg, Larry and Dell took turns leading through the scrub forest until Edith Lake was again reached. All the group appreciated the more gentle down trip. A great call by Larry. Once back to the trail head cold “pop” awaited along with Gail's famous Cowboy caviar. Great company made this trip a real treat.
