Write Up:
Our trip began at the Lubec-Firebrand Pass trailhead. We took the Firebrand Pass Trail around the east side of Calf Robe Mountain. We were all graced with the sighting of a lynx--for many it was a first. Once around Calf Robe, we ventured off-trail to the north for the southeast ridge of Red Crow just short of Lena Lake. This route suggested by Bud Izler included a wonderful ridge ascent with some great scrambling and views of Lena Lake. The summit time on Red Crow was short due to the usual 50-mph wind. Our descent was south to Firebrand Pass where we had a sheltered lunch. Our summit to Calf Robe is most easily accessed straight up the north slope, however due to the windy conditions the group chose the windward side and ascended around the northeast face of Calf Robe up various goat trails to the summit. Calf Robe makes for an easy trek home straight down its broad unmistakable southern face. Participants were: Ginger Flesch, Peter Markalunas, Rob Kealy, David Keim, Bud Iszler, James Hulvat, Pat Blake, Joe Schletz, Ken McDermott, Alan Wiley and Terry Sherburne.
