Jeff Crump and I met at the Stanton Lake trailhead off U.S. 2 just before 8:00 a.m. The early morning rain had stopped. We left shortly thereafter and walked the excellent trail to Stanton Lake. The Stanton Glacier clinging to the north slope of Great Northern Mountain was in plain view above the turquoise lake waters. We crossed Stanton Creek at the lake outlet and then backtracked through the forest to the trail, thereby avoiding the creek ford. A few hours later, we finished the 3,000 foot climb to the Grant Ridge saddle at 6,720 feet. We then climbed to the Grant Ridge summit at 6,956 feet. We ate lunch and enjoyed the 360 degree view. We descended the Grant Ridge Trail and completed the hike in the mid-afternoon. The last half mile is alongside U.S. 2. In retrospect, the best views are on the Grant Ridge arm of the loop and I recommend ascending this way. Descend to Stanton Lake as the view from the outlet should not be missed.
