Today I had the pleasure of leading an experienced group of competent climbers up my favorite route in Glacier. Linda Soper, Matt Brake, Brian Kennedy, Frank Wesolovski and I made quick work up to the ridge above Sky Lake. We took a short break and then enjoyed the two hour scramble up to the east summit. Matt had never been to the main summit so we decided to continue on. Linda noticed fresh grizzly tracks in the snow that remained just before the diorite cliffs below the summit. As we started to descend towards the normal ascent route there were the grizzlies, a sow and two yearling cubs, relaxing on the snow. Grizzlies can force a change of plans as has happened to me twice already this year. So, what was shaping up to be a quick Rising Wolf day turned into a 10.5 hour day with a visit to Dawson Pass. Regardless, it was worthwhile getting the views of the high lakes in the Dry Fork along the westward ridge walk. Temperatures were mild. The air was clear. The wind was brutal at times, as it can be. No bugs. Very enjoyable trip. Matt jogged up and down Flinsch during the descent. I'll post photos later. Frank has some available on Facebook. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
