Write Up:
Due to popular demand, Great Northern was again the order of the day to cap off GMS week 2015. At it's peak, the waiting list topped out at 18, but on go day, the team numbered 8. Just about right. Everything got off to good start, as unlike last year, the coordinator even managed to arrive on time for the hike. So everyone put it in low gear and toughed out the initial ascent on the steep trail which goes up through the forest and eventually breaks out on the ridge. As usual the summit appeared way far away but with time it got closer and eventually came within reach. With less than a half hour to go to the top, the weather took a turn and clouds began to approach with lightning flashes. (Darn old typical GMS week weather again). Since the coordinator doesn't want to be remembered as the guy who's hike ended with 8 people struck and killed by lightning during GMS week, the team was turned around even as some expressed their disappointment with howls of "you sure pulled the plug on that in a hurry". At one point shelter was taken out of the wind and rain in a small cranny behind the ridge. People seemed to enjoy the day anyway and happily descended knowing the mountain will always be there and since it's a great hike we would give it another shot soon. Snacks and drinks fueled an after hike celebration of a good and safe day with good hiking companions.
