Write Up:
Alice Ford, Ken McDermott, Laurel Vielle, and Frank Wesolovski, joined me in celebrating the Fourth of July with a ridgewalk traverse from Mount Furlong to Devil Creek. The weather forecast was looking pretty good, a little cloudy, but no rain. Sounded good, eh? Starting at Bear Creek along Highway 2, we headed up the Edna Creek trail, in the deep dark forest. The trail climbs steadily all the way to the summit of Furlong. From Furlong, we followed the ridge line to a low saddle above Elk Lake and below another ridge that leads to Forester Peak. We had plans to climb Forester Peak, but strong winds and horizontal rains forced us to take cover in the trees at the saddle. We realized Forester was not going to work, so we made our way over a ridge line that divides the two basins. Once on the other side, we were able to get on a trail and make our way into Devil Creek and out to the trailhead. According to Frank's GPS, the trip was 14 miles and 5,200 feet of climbing--not 9 miles as stated in the description. It was a good trip with a fun group of hikers--and a wonderful Fourth of July celebration!
