Write Up:
The day began with the 9 participants meeting at the Fielding parking area and leaving some vehicles, then heading to the Goat Lick parking area to begin shortly after 8 AM. Immediately the terrain becomes uphill and the 45 degree air was much appreciated as the opening in the fence was found and the climb up Running Rabbit began. Climbing was a bit strenuous but not overly difficult, and gradually the elevation of the climbers began to more closely match the elevation of the summit of Running Rabbit, which is visible to the right of the route. At the top of the first long uphill haul a ridge is attained where a short rest and picnic brunch with a view was enjoyed by those who had run out of their 6 AM breakfast by then. From there the summit of Running Rabbit's an easy short climb. The time was around 11:30 and the elevation gain was around 3400' already. The next destination, Snowslip Mountain was visible and the route obvious so onward went the group. At approximately the low spot between the two mountains, who do we see? Our great GMS friends, Mark Haemig and April and Gary Seubert out on their own adventure. Greetings were exchanged, future plans made and then off we went on our separate adventures. The ascent up Snowslip was short and steep and another picnic on that summit seemed to be the right thing in celebration of a great day in progress. Underway again, a short descent was required to the long ridges leading to Mt. Shields. More ridgewalking, another summit at 6936, perfect weather, and great views. This is hereby designated a classic Glacier Park hike. Everything went well on the final descent. Cold drinks were waiting with snacks aplenty for an after hike celebration. Some of the participants may even would have admitted to being a little tired after 11 hours, 3 summits and around 5000' elevation gain.
