Write Up:
The Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness was the setting for a Sunday, August 16th climb of Little Rainbow Mountain (9,989), Mount Howe (10,472) and Mount Evans (10,641) by a stellar GMS crew. Brian Kennedy, Denise Davies, David and Stacey Endebrock, Louis Hatch, Lou Hemitt, Scott Pomeroy, Laurel Vielle, Mark Pearson, David King, Paul Jensen joined Gail and Dell Meuchel at their family cabin on Boulder Creek Saturday evening for a wonderful pot luck prior to Sunday's adventure. The last mile of “road” to Storm Lake and the trail head was challenging to say the least. There was a fine smokey haze in the valley but the intended peaks were all visible. At Storm Pass David E., David K. Stacey, Laurel and Scott set out to climb Tiny Mountain (9848) to add a possible fourth summit to their day. The yo-yo route would include a 900 foot climb of Little Rainbow, a 1,400 foot trudge to Howe and another 900 foot slog to Evans. The entire route was along the continental divide and we were rewarded with spectacular, although smoke limited vistas. We were seven hours to the final summit (Evans) and four back via a “short cut”. Typical GMS shortcut- the coordinator having never done it “thought” it would go. It did but a cliffy bowling alley, plentiful boulder hopping and (of course) a swampy bushwhack were involved. At journey’s end all climbers were accounted for and a tailgate of chips, salsa, and beverages were shared. This group more than rose to the challenges of the day. My thanks to all. Dell Meuchel
