Coordinator: Dell Meuchel Eight GMS members arrived at 7:00 am for a long journey to summit three peaks in the Ole Creek drainage. Denise Davies, Frank Wesolovski, Alda Sigvaldason, Peter Markalunas, Ken McDermott, Warren Lane, and Martin Valles joined me on the adventure. We proceeded up the Fielding Trail fording cold Ole Creek to gain the southwest flank of Sheep. There was one little mistake as the coordinator failed to read the sign to Fielding and led the group about a mile and a half down the wrong trail. Righting our course, with Frank’s help, we reached the proper trail head. It is a long “slog” up Sheep but most of the elevation necessary to summit the three peaks is gained in the effort. The day was cloudy, a welcome relief to a trip that would eventually cove nearly twenty miles and 6000 vertical feet. All three summits were reached without incident the group was steady and all shared in route finding roles when necessary. Up on reaching the exposed summit of Brave Dog thunder began and we could see the clouds building just north of us. St. Nick was trapped in a dark angry shroud, we all agreed, not the place to be. We rapidly evacuated off Brave Dog and headed to Solider. Our group was very fortunate as to the weather around us. We were chased all the way back to the Fielding Trail Head by thunder but never got wet. Refreshment became the order of the day along with chips and salsa. Peter Markalunas needs to be commended for completing along long grueling climb having just arrived from New Jersey. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
