Write Up:
Seven GMS'ers started up the incredibly steep climbers trail for Great Northern at 9 am. Temps were mild in the shade and the pace was easy going. Once above tree line impressive views of the mountain open up. Great Northern dominates the immediate surrounding peaks. As one gains elevation a panoramic view opens up as one can see south to Swan and Holland Peaks, east to Old Baldy and Rocky Mountain, and north to Cleveland and Kintla as well as west to the Cabinets and the Missions. The route takes on an alpine feel as you pass above and next to the Stanton Glacier. The group moved past the awkward crux and summited 15 minutes later. Along on the climb were Della Somwaru, Guy Dean Bateman, Alda Sigvaldason, Steve Muller, Dean Stensland, our esteemed GMS week planner Tim Anderson and your winter planner Joe-ski. Thanks everyone for a great day on a great peak. Special thanks to Tim for helping me out as tail gunner on the ascent.
