Write Up:
Thirteen people turned out for Sixmile to Orvis Evans April 30, and we all started up the trail shortly after 9. It wasn't long before patches of snow obstructed the trail, and soon after that, the trail was totally under snow. Footing was good, the steep side hilling in snow presented no sense of danger, and everyone just carefully cruised along without fear. What's usually a trail hike seemed a bit more of a mountaineering adventure, hiking on deep snow, often drifted and wind sculpted. The convivial group enjoyed an extended picnic on the summit of Sixmile and due to the added challenges of snow which required greater effort of early season legs, it was decided that one summit was enough to provide a satisfying adventure for one day. With good snow cover, the avoidance of brush and deadfall allowed a different descent route than the usual standard trail route. The summit ridge was followed to the south, then to the west, and finally to a wide gully which led back to the trail. Back at the vehicles after about 6 hours, after hike festivities proceeded, with snacks and drinks to cap off a great day in the Swan Range.
