Write Up:
The ascent of Moss Peak began up the boulders on the north end from the abandoned road into Hellroaring Basin. Once beyond the boulders the hiking is pleasant off trail travel through low brush, some trees and occasional rock. Views of the south end of Flathead Lake, and the northern Missions are right in the vicinity, with the Swan Range, and on up to Glacier in the distance. Fall weather was close to if not perfect. The exploratory portion, past the summit of Moss Peak, went as hoped and the Cedar Lake Divide was attained without difficulty. The route up Cedar Peak lay before at that point with the summit estimated at a half an hour away. With early sunset and still some uncertainty about the time required to get back to the start, Cedar Peak was left for another time. The route back to Hellroaring Pass went extremely well and trail was intersected which led to Rainbow Lake, Hellroaring Pass, the snow survey cabin, and the vehicles where snacks and drinks were awaiting. A happy friendly group also made it a great day. This is a trip worth doing again in a nice and often overlooked portion of the Mission Range.
