Six GMS members participated in this year's scramble to Snow Moon - Falling Leaf. We did the traditional route (scramble up dry creek bed, trail along base of cliff, climb through chimney to basin, basin to lakes by goat / people trail, return by high route above face of cliff, scramble down scree to woods adjacent to Many Glacier parking lot) with the addition of a side hike up the ridge on the east side of Falling Leaf Lake. We accessed the ridge by crossing the outlet at the foot of Falling Leaf Lake then traversed diagonally up the ridge to the saddle above Snow Moon Lake. We descended to the rear of Snow Moon Lake and then bushwhacked to the other side via the plateau and gully between the two lakes. A few in the group were surprised that the actual event was more difficult than expected. They felt the description of the hike didn't adequately describe the exposure on the return portion above the cliffs. A couple of people said they choose this event because they thought it would be easy. Possibly the description should be adjusted accordingly. Prior to the event I mapped out the route in Google Earth and sent all attendees the .KMZ file. The route was very accurate and helpful, particularly in finding the trail through the woods to the parking lot. Overall, a great day in Glacier.

Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you.
