July 8, 2017. Mount Grant, 8,590 feet. Trip Leaders: Brenda Winkler and Bruce Lieffring Climbers: Cynthia Weaver; Abigail Nase, Jeanette Houghtelling; A small group of 5 which worked out great for this trip. Predicted High in the valley 95 degrees; light breeze. Started time 8:05am. Reached to summit in approximately 5 hours; took an hour break on the top. Finish time 6:55 pm. Total Time 10 hrs 50 minutes. Trip Distance 9 miles round trip. Elevation one way 5,200; Round trip 5,700 Met everyone as planned. Starting hiking in the cool of the morning with the sun on the other side of the mountain and reached the summit before the heat was too intense. We had cooler temperatures on the top with a breeze to keep the bugs away. We enjoyed the glacier and mountain views for an hour and then started our descent. The temperatures climbed as we descended. The snowfields provided pleasant diversions on our descent. Having completed this hike twice we found that it is very easy to get off track in the last 2000 feet of bushwhacking. Its imperative to keep to the crest of the ridge line. It is easy to get off into a wrong drainage. We used GPS backtrack and phone applications to keep us on track. The trip took about one hour longer than we estimated in our writeup. This is a very steep off trail hike requiring lots of stamina and our group did very well. Four of us ran out of water within the last 1/2 hour of the hike but everyone did great.
