We caught the dragon sleeping and climbed the sacred Cube Iron mountain one fine, nearly smoke-free Saturday in late August. In his fury at having missed us he sparked 3 new fires on the western flanks of the mountain a week later closing the area to the public. The group thoroughly enjoyed this easy 9 mile ramble around a loop of forest service trails in the Four Lakes Basin area of the southern Cabinet mountains. There was some grumbling, however, at the short, steep, bushwhack to save a quarter mile backtrack. The loop included an afternoon stop at Cabin Lake where feet and whole bodies were dipped before the last few miles to the trailhead where we toasted a day well spent in the mountains.
