Write Up:
Canyon Creek in the Bitterroot Mountains was the setting for a GMS climb of North Canyon and Sheer Point on Friday July 6th. Joining Robin Young, Don Arthur, Linda Soper, Edie and Richard Smith were coordinators Gail and Dell Meuchel. Cool temperatures and soft clouds greeted us at the trail head. Our trek for the first four miles was in thick forest with occasional glimpses of granite cliffs. After a steep trail assent we broke out to a spectacular view of Canyon Falls. After continuing through sparse trees our route was dominated by large granite slabs. Linda took on the route finding task as we made our way through class 3 rocks to the saddle between Sheer Point and North Canyon. The 400 foot plunge from Sheer Point to the valley floor was jaw dropping. From the saddle we scrambled up to the summit of North Canyon then yo-yoed to Sheer Point. We returned to the trail head for beverages and Cowboy Caviar with chips. A great group and a beautiful day.
