Write Up:
The Rocky Mountain Front was the backdrop and Ear Mountain the objective for our GMS trip on June 29th. Climbers included Adam McClure, Lou Herritt, Micheal Sterbis, Laurie Lintner, Edie Smith, Dennis Eaves, Gail and Dell Meuchel with coordinator Robin Young. At Robin's suggestion we all spent a wonderful evening camping at the Ear Mountain Game Range Campground before the climb. A stunning hike through dazzling wildflowers took us to the mountain's base. Laurie's wildflower expertise was very appreciated. The base approach was the usual “Front” grind, up and up. Upon reaching the west side of Ear our group was greeted with a sea of peaks. The push to the summit through the narrow gully was slow and careful. No matter where you climb photos never do justice to the views and Ear was spectacular. The east face coming down proved how quickly the dangers of climbing can appear. We all made a conscious effort to spread out and lessen rock fall but several climbers ended up in harms way. No serious injuries but a reminder to always be careful. Chips and beverages were shared at the campground at the end of a great day. I wrote this summary as our dear climbing colleague Robin is in Missoula climbing her rehab mountain after a horrific fall in the Beartooths a month ago. By Dell Meuchel
