After the Ear Mountain climb Saturday we headed to the Cave Mountain Campground for our Sunday, June 30th attempt of Washboard Reef. Robin Young was our coordinator. Joining her were Lou Herritt, Nicole and Mark Pearson, Anne Dellwo, Laurie Lintner, Edie Smith, Andrew Koopman, with Gail and Dell Meuchel. As we pulled up to the trail head two vehicles with ladies suddenly appeared, intent on climbing Mount Wright. As we were about to head up the trail a third vehicle appeared with a surprise GMS member, Tom Kotynski. Tom “literally” wrote the book on climbing and hiking on the Rocky Mountain Front. His wife Katie was leading the “ladies” only Mount Wright climb so we asked him to join us. Tom enthusiastically accepted and became our guide to Washboard and beyond. Robin was quite gracious allowing Tom to “lead” the way with running commentary, quite a treat. Following the trail up to Teton Pass we were surrounded by beautiful ridge lines. At the pass we exited the trail and began the extended ridge walk that is Washboard Reef. As always the ridge was a yo-yo only with stunning views into the “Bob”, multitudes of peaks and massive cliff walls. We returned to the trailhead via the Nesbit and Wrong Creek trails to salsa, chips and beer. A spectacular climb with great friends. I wrote this summary as our dear climbing colleague Robin is in Missoula climbing her rehab mountain after a horrific fall in the Beartooths a month ago.
