Pinnacle Wall Goat Trail- July 25th 2010 Coordinator: Dell Meuchel Nine eager GMS members met at 8:00 am to embark on a Gordon Edwards classic the Pinnacle Wall Goat Trail. None of the participants had experienced the exposure and views from the trail so we were off to a quick start. Without incident we found ourselves at Ptarmigan Lake refilling water bottles for the dry ridge run. Martin Valles, Lisa Easton, Matt Marcinek, Charleen Coleman (my guest), and Rob Kealy composed the “Ferrari “group. Gail Meuchel, Susan Schwartz, Rick Murphy, and I were the VW group. A walk through the Ptarmigan Tunnel gave us a glimpse of views to come. It was a beautiful day and the sights were spectacular. The group was in awe as each corner brought more vistas. Old Sun Glacier was magnificent as was Merrit’s summit. Ipasha Glacier fed ribbon upon ribbon of falls cascading down to Helen Lake. Hundreds of feet of red, tan, and gray rock fell from the trail below us and reached to the sky above. The trail is truly a work of art. The Iceberg Lake Trail was closed due to a sow and cubs so our plan was to take the “escape route” up to the Ptarmigan Ridge and drop down to the Ptarmigan Tunnel trail. After traversing the Goat trail for an hour we returned to the escape route and followed it out to the Tunnel trail. The plan was a success and the group was now in road gear. My thanks to a wonderful group to climb with and their constantly helping and encouraging one another. Gail’s salsa was a welcome treat at the end of a glorious day.
