From Lake McDonald Lodge, some of us skied and others snowshoed to the Trout Lake trailhead. From there we all donned snowshoes, headed up the trail and then over to the Howe Ridge trail to the high point. Thanks to Don Stolte for letting us know about the ancient larch lookout tree on the summit. Despite at least two forest fires, the dead larch was still standing with spikes going high above ground level. After a brief lunch, we headed down more directly to the North McDonald road and back out to the trailhead to regain skis and to the vehicle. It was a beautiful winter excursion!
