Cindy Weaver, Dennis Eaves, guest Jonmichael Weaver (Cindy’s nephew)— summited Tim Anderson—Firebrand pass and turned around Charlotte Jansson, Carolyn Remmel—Red Crow and turned around With COVID closure of east side of the park, I was happy that Bearhead Mountain was not going to elude me again. Firebrand Pass at Lubec trailhead was opened. Wind was strong and as always, gets stronger at passes. Never-the-less, after leaving Tim Anderson at Firebrand Pass, we pressed on leaning into the wind to the summit of Red Crow. Stopping briefly to look down on Lena Lake and the panoramic view in all directions. Charlotte and Carolyn decided they were not up for Bearhead with the wind and more elevation to gain. Cindy, Dennis and Jonmichael pressed on. Dennis had summited Bearhead previously (maybe twice). The scree sidehill crossing to Desanto Pass is slow going. We probably started turning up toward the peak a bit too early, but made it to the top. Found a great depression walled on all sides to protect us from the howling wind for lunch. We descended more directly toward Desanto Pass and connected with the scree traverse back to the saddle above Lena Lake. To return a different route, we descended to Lena Lake and connected with the trail below Firebrand Pass. Back to cars and trailhead with no incident. Great end to GMS week.
