This was a difficult year for exploratory climbs with so much of Glacier closed and no undesignated backcountry permits available. We gave peak 7,812 a try from the Trout Lake trailhead by hiking to Arrow Lake, crossing the outlet, and then starting an extensive bushwhack from the head of Arrow. Unfortunately, with the wet June, the hawthorn, devil’s club, downfall, and all the brush was high, thick, and frustrating. After several hours of bushwhacking we finally got above the worst of it but ran out of time what might have been the more interesting part of the climb. Instead, we tried (and failed) to find a better descent route, and then hiked back out to the trailhead. After 18.5 miles and a near 6,000’ gain, we got back to the cars before hard dark with a better idea of which routes not to try next year.
