Write Up:
A quite willing GMS group rendezvoused at the Middle Fork Trail head in the Pintler Wilderness to attempt Warren Peak on Saturday August 15th. This beautiful 10,450 foot peak promised commanding views form the Bitterroots to the Pioneers and the Mission Range. Laurel Vielle, Warren Lane, Lou Hatch, Mark Pearson, and Dell Meuchel made the 13 mile, 4300 foot journey via trail and endless, endless talus. It was a stark trip as we wound through the devastation of the 2018 Meyers Ridge fire. Needless to say the dust/ soot trail left us “blackened” at the end. We approached by the Johnson Lake to Edith Trail. At the junction for Edith Lake we found no trail, none. I had led this climb several years before and the trail was a “highway”. We searched and searched, nothing. No problem the GPS experts (Laurel and Warren) simply pointed straight up the ridge to where the lake should be and off we went. At the top of the ridge, 500 feet later, there was the “highway”. My first words “vindication”, I am not crazy. From the lake it was a 2500 foot slog on talus of all sizes. Laurel led the way and of course could not pass a high point indicated on the map at 8450. Warren and I followed and we waited for Mark and Lou. They didn't show until we spotted them several hundred feet below us but and quarter mile further the ridge towards the summit. They obviously knew what they were doing. A surprise encounter occurred on our tip down. At about 4:15 we met four “young” gentlemen, trial runners at mile four on their way to the summit. Oh, to be young again. Dell Meuchel
