Saturday February 26th six brave (crazy) GMS climbers met at Cascadilla River Access to attempt a winter climb of Threetops Mountain (6790). Frank Wesolovski, Brain Kennedy, Jack Beard, Jim Valentine, Franz Barthel and Dell Meuchel braved temperatures of -10 while fording the Middle Fork of the Flathead to assault Threetops. Through the scouting efforts of Jack and the GPS skills of Frank and Jim the planned route was formulated. After crossing the river three skiers (Frank, Brian and Jack) with the rest of us in snowshoes began the march up and down through the initial creek bottom terrain to Threetops southwestern ridge. We encountered a beautiful lake along the way with mild temperatures in the teens. The ridge assault was long and challenging. I have to credit the success of the trip to Frank, Brain and Jack who did the brunt of the trail breaking. Jim, Franz and I plowed as hard as we could. The summit was a treed jungle and views were quite limited by the closing cloud cover. Temperature at the top was +7 and somewhat windy. We quickly ate (cold hands and feet), took a summit photo (most cameras frozen) and headed out. Snow conditions were ideal for the skiers as we all rapidly descended. The snowshoers reached the Middle Fork and forded at 4:00 with the skiers close behind at 4:30. The day was 10 mile round trip and 3700 feet gained. A true GMS adventure with great companions. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
