Write Up:
The smoke that has dominated the summer of 2021 was only spotty on our July 10th climb of Castle Crag in the Bitterroots. My wife Gail and Bozeman native Anne Dellow were the extent of our GMS group. Located 7 miles up the Sheafman Canyon west of Hamilton, Castle Crag’s massive summit block is quite impressive from the valley floor. The Crag only comes into view from the trail when you approach Knaack Lake, where the real climbing begins. Our climbing route began on the north side of the lake gaining elevation as we traversed beautiful granite slabs. Our only unfortunate encounter of the day was hearing large rocks being rolled off a cliff band by a group of young hikers on an over night visit. We were sure they didn’t realize the potential danger they posed to others. The final approach was through many boulder fields around the southwest side of the mountain. The summit view is amazing and lived up to it’s billing as a “Bitterroot classic”.
