A group of three had a very challenging day ascending and partial night descent of Church Butte. No alpine start, a long approach and crossing Park Creek twice in addition to summiting a remote peak protected by a fortress of cliffs made for a very long day in the heat. The climb coordinator did not estimate the degree of difficulty and time necessary to do this mountain in a single day. We arrived at the Park Creek campground exhausted around midnight and were fortunate to be inside tents as the evening's rain grew considerably worse. Hiking out to Walton Ranger Station at dawn the next morning, we were thankful for a safe and successful summit and lessons learned on trying to do too much in one day. Church Butte is a very impressive mountain with a gentle summit surrounded by array of boulders and rough terrain.
