“Abort, abort” – is the end description of this attempted climb. Felix Peak came into the sights of Dennis and Cindy when we climbed Java Mtn Fall 2020. Reaching the summit before noon and seeing Felix in the distance, we thought we might get in a two-bagger. It ended up in a massive bushwhack and coming out in the dark, but an interest in returning via a different route to summit Felix Peak. The hike was delayed one day due to a rain forecast (weatherman correct this time). The group met on Highway 2 just past the RR bridge where the highway passes through Glacier National Park. Still some off-and-on drizzle in the air. After crossing a trestle bridge, we found the Great Bear Wilderness trail marker for Sheep and Elk trail. We headed out Trail #152/Sheep Creek heading west. The map shows the trail following the creek and eventually heading to a pass near Felix Peak. What it doesn’t show, is a very brushy, often non- descript trail. After slogging through wet brush and searching for the sometimes-faint trail or signs of it for 3 – 4 miles, it was determined that it would be almost impossible to reach the pass, let alone the summit in a reasonable time. We headed back leaving Felix unconquered again—maybe another try next season.
