The weather forecast was somewhat to be expected east-side only on steroids. Winds of 30-40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph! And, I think we hit it--several times. Coordinators Mike Contrada and Cindy Weaver discussed whether to abort, but you never know . . . . And depending on the aspect, you can be out of the wind. So, we pressed on with Sue Shannon, Dennis Eaves and Justin Heinrichs joining us. The parking lot trying to stand up against the wind was a bit discouraging, but the group elected to head out. There is a well-defined climber trail into Falling Leaf/Snow Moon basin and as it wrapped around the shoulder, it did protect us somewhat from the full force of the wind. As we headed up from the basin to the ridge, there were gusts that knocked you to the ground or for sure made you stop and brace and wait for a ‘lull’. Mike had summited Allen before and lead the way. Fun scrambling from the base of the summit ridge where we were mercifully protected from the wind once again. But, it hit us full force as we climbed to the other side of the ridge and headed toward the summit. It was hunker down climbing as we headed toward the summit cairn. Mike suggested we take the ‘more interesting’ route down and we came off the summit and joined the trail along Lake Josephine. The wind kept up all day but did not deter us from our celebratory tailgate. It is a beautiful hike and I would like to do it again—with less wind.
