Having climbed Apikuni years ago on another Memorial Day weekend, I can now confirm that it is a great early season climb. We started on the Apikuni Falls trail, and then at the junction just before the Falls, we took the old trail that goes up into the basin above the falls. With the late snow this year, we did have a few short sections with steep snow, but made it safely across with microspikes and kicking steps.
Once up into the basin, we just headed uphill along the windblown ridge until getting into some sections of fresh snow in the red argillite just below the summit ridge. On the ridge, there were a few sections of deeper snow, and a few cornices which were easy to avoid on the way to the summit. Despite clouds hanging out on the divide, the views were great. On the way down, we took a short detour over to a prominent fin sticking out from the cliffs east of Apikuni Falls along with a brief stop at the falls themselves. It was a great early season climb with a great group. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
