After rescheduling due to rain, we finally landed a bluebird day, only to find the East Glacier trailhead closed by a bear. Undeterred, we relocated to Two-Med and climbed the two peaks from the backside via Scenic Point trail. This route turned out to be more scenic and allowed us to break the Park record for ‘longest snow traverse’ (0.4 mi across the north flank of Medicine Peak). The “Endless Traverse” relinquished no sign of progress, as the end never seemed to get closer. Its snow surface was covered with a thin glaze that, when dislodged by our kick-steps, made some sort of weird musical sounds. Several bands of bighorn sheep were seen along the way, as well as two skiers making turns down Appistoki basin. Vegetation was not yet green, nor in bloom. The trail was mostly clear. Many thanks to Frank for finding routes around the snow-plugged sections. Greg, John and Jason took a relaxing scenery break at Bison while the rest of the group continued on to The Head. Distance and time to Bison was 4.5 mi and 2800’ vertical in 3 hours, plus an extra mile and 400’ vertical R/T to the Head. Return duration was 2 hours. A glorious day with great people. Pictured on Bison Mountain, the 9 climbers were: Back row L to R: Greg Kushnak (coordinator), Denis Twohig, Bill Haring, Jane Holland, James Hulvat, Frank Wesolovski & Jason Glenn; Front row, L to R: Sue Shannon & John Ellis.
