Write Up:
After checking out conditions on Friday afternoon before the day of the climb we decided to try Mt. Lockhart. David Schuler and Alan Wiley joined Denise and I for a start at the Teton Pass Ski resort. We brought ice axes and snow shoes. We quickly ditched the snow shoes in the woods after determining that the snow was supportable. We ascended the peak located above the resort which I will call Little Lockhart via the snow gully that leads directly to the summit. The snow was soft enough such that the ice axes stayed on the pack the entire day but not so soft to make it unpleasant. From the summit we traversed to Lockhart on the broad connecting ridge which was mostly snow free, except for the last 1/3 of the ridge connection. We returned via the same route. I feel that this outing is likely a precursor of trips to come this climbing season; mixed snow and rock offering an alpine feel. As the snow begins to settle into a summer snow pack an ice axe and crampons will come in handy. As of this date the snow coverage is looking more like the end of April than the middle of June. Creek crossings are extremely dangerous if not impossible. The weather forecast is almost unreliable this spring. We were looking at 80% rain probabilities for both days. As it turned out there were a couple of showers that passed both north and south of us but otherwise it was a great day. Broken clouds, light breeze and temperatures on the 50's. David will post some photos on Picasa. Thanks to everyone that made the trip to the Front. I had a another great day in the mountains with some really nice GMS'ers.
