Five GMSers and one energetic pup made a trip to the southern Swan Range near Ovando for a trip up Monture Mountain. After meeting in Ovando to make sure all made it to the trailhead, we started out before we got stuck behind a platoon of bicycles racing on the same road to Seeley Lake. From the trailhead it was five miles on a lightly used trail (by people, plenty of bear sign, and large bears at that). It was agreed that later in the summer the trail would be pretty overgrown and that early summer was best for this trip. After five miles, we made our way up off trail through a sparse burn area, reconnecting with the old Blackfeet Divide trail. From the pass we made our up the ridge of Monture, encountering a couple of snow fields which were hard packed and easy to traverse without snowshoes or traction. Soon we were on the summit, sharing the high point with the most lady bugs i have ever seen in one place. Returning the same way and we were back at the cars in a few hours for some refreshment before parting. Total day was about 15 miles and 4k ft of climbing. Coordinator rates the objective as a 7.3 out of 10, while he rates the participants as a 14 out of 10. Monture isn’t the most spectacular peak in Montana, but it is a good one to get in some early season mileage I think. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album?
