Full sun day on Ahern. Set off at 6:30 am from the loop en route to the highline. Very pleasant on the highline to ahern pass, particularly the section between ahern drift (fully melted out today) and the trail to ahern pass. All the drainages had water tumbling out, unusual for this late in the summer, possibly due to continued melting of snow from earlier in the week. It was welcome on the warm hike out. From ahern pass we followed the intermittent climbers trail over class II terrain and in not too long we were at the summit. Golden and bald eagles played on thermals far overhead. Lake Helen dazzled in brilliant turquiose a few thousand feet straight below us. The hike out was warm, particulalry coming back on the loop...that trail is what is lol, just get the thing done. Around 20 miles and 5000' of climbing in just under 12 hours. Rebecca and Smokey were awesome partners, thanks to them for helping make this day pretty much what I wanted it to be. Sorry I forgot my post-hike refreshment cooler which I had a delicious dixon melon in it. Smokey saved the day with a Coke he had in his cooler. Amazing the number of people who were driving up to Logan's when we were starting, and that we saw no other people until we were on our way back. Felt like a totally different park. Great day.
