Coordinators: Mike Contrada, Cindy Weaver Hikers: David Archibald, Sam Jacobs, Brendan O’Brien, Rob Bates Grambauer is a peak in the Cabinet Mountains just SE of Troy, MT elevation 7,377’. It was scheduled during the hot spell in mid-July and it lived up to the forecast. Fortunately, most of the way up was shaded by the aspect of the mountain and forested trails. To avoid the long drive, everyone either stayed in hotels in Libby or camped near the trail head. The trail started at a gravel pit and wound up to the ridge of Grambauer where a series of grinding switchbacks lead higher and higher. The trail passes just under a thousand-foot lower ‘junior’ peak—William Grambauer Mtn—6793’. Discussion on whether to ‘snag’ it on the way back down. Brendan did end up doing this and reported it was fairly open with not much bushwhacking. As we neared the summit, the slopes opened and the views from the top were 360 degrees--Snowshoe Peak, A Peak, Libby and Troy, Kootenai River in the distance or below in the valley floor. Enticing huckleberries had been noted on the way up. Everyone enjoyed delicious handfuls. Brendan and Cindy actually picked. As the end of the day and the end of the trail merged, the blistering heat made the last 2 miles a slog. Tailgate party was definitely in the shade and good to get into air conditioned vehicles for a cool ride home and get ready for upcoming GMS week. 15.5 miles round-trip, 5,047 ft elevation gained
