Write Up:
It was a hot day, so we gained elevation before lunch and enjoyed a cool dip in Cobalt Lake. There was plenty of water along the way for those with filters. We found an outstanding display of Lewis's (pink) monkeyflowers in mounds just before Cobalt Lake. A small, wet rock outcropping before that revealed the only yellow monkeyflowers seen that day, but overall the wildflowers gave us plenty to ID and photograph while the group made for friendly conversation. We discussed differences between plants: aster/fleabane, angelica/cow parsnip, arnica/groundsel, pipsisewa/pink wintergreen. Coordinators Anna Hansen-Lane and Cecelia Notess had explored the area 4 days before, enabling Anna to prepare a handy flower chart sorted by location: meadow, woods,and alpine. There were reports of a cow moose and calf swimming in the marshes. According to Dan Swanson, "The hike was rich in diversity and the wildflowers ranged from subtle to stunning, from seafoam to monkey flowers."
