Five GMSers and one non-GMS (wife) journeyed into the Mokowanis drainage to try for Bear & Sentinel from Cosley Lake. Hike in from the Belly was a sloppy mess from a storm the night before, but skies had cleared and the day was one of those beautiful early fall days that make people want to move to Montana. Camp at Cosley Lake was very pleasant. A lone wolf howled spookily into the night. The next day was summit day and while still relatively clear the wind had picked up considerably. We made our way up the trail to Bear Mountain Point, then followed a goat trail for a bit above some small cliffs, then ascended up scree slopes to get the ridge. It was at this point the coordinator knew he was in trouble. Lagging behind the others it was evident I had no juice. We continued up the ridge through a couple of very small cliff breaks. I pulled myself up to the summit of Bear Mountain where the others were hunkering down from the wind. I made the decision not to continue and to descend back down the mountain, while the others went on to tag Sentinel. I was disappointed in my performance and apologize to the other participants, but I am thankful they were able to continue and complete the trip as planned. It's probably not a great look when the coordinator is the only one who doesn't complete the trip, but that's probably to be expected when you don't sleep and your nutrition is terrible when you go backpacking lol. A lesson for the kids. The hike out the next day was pleasant and the weather really couldn't have been nicer the whole weekend, except the wind on summit day, but I guess that should be expected as winter draws near. Spectacular part of GLAC. Long live the Belly & Mokowanis drainages. What an amazing group. Laurel and Dell are GMS legends at this point, and I consider it a win if I can see them when we are hiking together haha. Adam is a machine and his climbing abilities are eclipsed only by how nice of a person he is to be around. Matt did great as well, being his first GMS event, a multi- day trip no less. I think I need to start screening groups so I'm not the weak link lol. Thanks to all involved for a great trip.
