The originally scheduled climb of Mt. Baptiste was changed to Lone Walker since the east side road around Hungry Horse Reservoir was closed for longer than they had initially planned. Lone Walker was tempting as several members of the group had attempted it the week prior but ran out of time before obtaining the summit. With their experience from the previous week, we aimed for easier access to the diagonal shelf that goes through the cliffs by the head of Upper Two Med Lk. so we had sufficient time to get to the summit. After hiking to Upper Two Med Lk., we were able to make our way around the north side primarily on the beach or with short cuts up into the dense brush. A few in the group chose to use wading shoes rather than bushwhack. It took about the same amount of time. By doing this later in the year, we had much more beach to walk than we might have earlier in the season. We scrambled up steep, sometimes hard packed scree fields to catch the hidden diagonal cut that got us up to the saddle between Helen and Lone Walker. From there we mostly took the ridge until angling west near the summit and traversed all the was to the southwest side where we found a gully providing access to the summit. For the descent we took a more direct gully on the north side.
Another great day in the park with great views and a wonderful group of climbers. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
