A cool morning greeted 6 GMS climbers in the Bitterroots on their way to Castle Crag. A long 7-mile trail needed to be negotiated before there was even a glimpse of our destination. I dubbed it the “Geritol” group as Brian Sugden was our youngest member at 57. Brian was joined by Joe Schmidt, Mike and Jean Petrangelo, along with coordinators Gail and Dell Meuchel. A fun crew that was full speed ahead through the forested boulder strewn trail. The first peek of Castle Crag is breathtaking. A granite monolith rising above the forest. From Naack Lake the route rises steeply to the summit access ridge, a trudge. Then the long boulder hop begins. Tedious is the best way to describe the crux. I thank Mike for his route-finding skills as we wove through the boulders. The return trip was without incident and the climb finished with chips and beverages.
