We had a beautiful May day for our summit of Elk mountain. With a later 10 AM start we had warm conditions as we started out until shortly after we reached the Fielding cabin. Once we started to quickly gain elevation the weather cooled off and we hit snow in patches at around 6000’ once the trail winds to the north face of the mountain. More sustained snow was encountered directly after the single switchback until we reached the summit ridge. Snowshoes were unnecessary, but spikes were very helpful. Hardly any snow at all from the ridge to the summit, and it was almost all avoided at that point. We summited around 1 PM, had lunch and an uneventful descent, 5:45 total trip time. I would recommend mid-May for Elk again in the future, a great early season on-trail warm-up hike. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
