Sofa Mountain – 8,252 ft 7/25/25 Cindy Weaver, April Seubert, Gary Seubert, Bill Shulz, Laurel Vielle After a rainy start to GMS week, the day dawned bright and sunny. However, the wind prevented us from lounging at lunch on ‘Sofa’ mountain. Note to self: Canadian maps have a marking that looks a lot like trail designation for ‘routes’. The trail ends at a waterfall that many hikers consider their final destination. For GMS- weekers to summit Sofa, we headed off trail and up a ridge. Another note to self: most of the write-ups (like this from Summit Post “ascend the steep, grassy slope up to the ridge. Scramble over unexpectedly solid talus, winding your way south along the broad, final ridge to the summit) are deceptively benign leading the unsuspecting scrambler to think this was going to be a cinch. The ridge provided a very respectable ‘scramble’. Laurel thought there were a couple of short sections that could have been Class IV—for sure Class III++. A group of Canadian hikers was right behind us, and we asked for route advice at the start of the ridge to make sure we were on the right track. We hunkered down in a small cove of krummholz out of the wind for lunch and then pushed on to the summit. Again, the wind wasn’t conducive to a leisurely summit hangout. But, the views, as promised, were spectacular in all directions. Great destination and scrambling partners. Would add in next description to wear helmets and expect some fun scrambling. 9.9 miles, 4,720 ft ascent Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album?
