With lots of lower elevation snow melting in April and early May, this was a surprisingly early climb of Stanton. Fortunately, the Going to the Sun Road opened to Avalanche just minutes before we started, so we did not have to bike to the Trout Lake Trailhead. We hiked to the high point on the trail and then took the well-traveled climbers’ trail straight up the ridge. We did not run into any snow on the way up until near the top, skirting most of one snowfield and crossing deeper snow on the summit itself. It was a great early season warm up with an enjoyable group.
8.4 miles from the Trout Lake Trailhead, 4,557’ vertical gain, and just shy of 7 hours.
