A beautiful day with perfect temperatures for a climb of Amphitheater and Medicine Owl. We left the trail at the creek crossing at about 2.2 miles, heading north for about 1/4 mile and then left (west) to start ascending the southeast ridge. Once up on the main ridge, we followed the goat/sheep trail pretty much all the way to the summit dome, where we ascended a coulier on the south side of the summit. From there six of the eight of us enjoyed a pleasant descent to the northwest then down the saddle between Amphitheater and Medicine Owl and a short walk up to the summit of Medicine Owl. It was a great outing with a tremendous group of climbers! Everyone worked together to encourage each other. Route finding is very straight forward. Two things that went not so well was (1) during the short bushwhack after leaving the creek bed we stirred up a bees nest and three people got stung. Fortunately no one was seriously allergic and all were able to continue on. The second thing was that I (Randy) slipped on a wet section of rock while descending off the summit of Amphitheater and face planted very fast on the edge of the north face cliff. I had made the mistake of taking my eyes off of my footing to scope the route, but kept walking. We had not encountered any wet rock up that point, but we were now on the north side in the shade. It could have ended in tragedy, but fortunately only resulted in a slightly injured hand and injured pride. A good lesson to always keep your eyes on your footing!
