Despite an early start to try to get parking at Logan Pass, the car just in front of us pulled into the last space in the parking lot. Some of us parked at the Big Drift and others at Oberlin Bend. Once we found each other, we headed up the crowded boardwalk and then partway down towards Hidden Lake, we took the climbers’ trail to Birdwoman Pass. From the Pass we started up towards Mount Cannon until just before the cliffs start along the ridge. We then followed a faint goat trail across the steep south face of Cannon. There is typically a very steep, dangerous snow field along this route, but by late August it was small enough for us to skirt along the top edge safely. After we got to the west ridge of Cannon, we traversed back and forth along the ridge looking for the easiest routes to the summit of the Southwest peak of Cannon. The view from there down to Avalanche Lake and Lake McDonald is tremendous. On the way back, after successfully navigating back along the precipitous south face, the group decided to add a quick trip up Mount Cannon as well.
The total trip for both peaks was about 11 miles, 3,865’ of gain, and just shy of 11 hours, although one member’s tracking app claimed we did more than 7,000’ of vert.
