Write Up:
Carpooled to trailhead. Had nice drive to the NF watching the sun rise. Started on the trail at 9am as planned. At the junction, the group split as Mike and Betsy wanted a bit slower pace. Fall colors were just beginning to pop with some larches turning a nice golden color. Unfortunately by the time we got above tree line, the smoke had rolled in fairly thick and visibility was poor. The remaining 4 made it to the summit just before 12noon and made a quick jaunt down to the border. The group reconvened on the way back to the junction and continued on to the LO where Leif was still manning the station. Had a lovely 1 hr break and visit with Leif and his dog. Probably the highlight of the trip. Made it back to the trailhead and vehicles around 4:45 for salty snacks and drinks. Then saw a couple bears and elk on the drive home while the sun set. Total trip = 13 miles R/T and 4,000 ft
