After multiple weather related reschedules, an official GMS event made it to the top of Arsenic. A cold front moved through the night before, again threatening weather, but the day turned out perfect weather wise, and we had little effects from the fire burning just to our south. Starting from Gibson Reservoir, we took the nice trail to Mortimer Pass, passing through stands of pine, aspen, and open park. Before the pass we came upon a herd of mules and horses, accompanied by a cowgirl who very much looked like she knew what she was doing. After the pass, we descended into Big George Gulch, and turned off trail at a hunters camp. Steeply up the eastern slope, to some treadmill scree, and finally on top of the ridge. Skies were dark and there was a little snow spitting here and there, but the winds were not as fierce as predicted. Beautiful views from the summit into the South Fork Sun valley, an ocean of peaks to the north, and open space in every direction. After the hike back we enjoyed some refreshments and companionship from a couple of nice dogs. Shout out to a most excellent group who all drove a very long way to join me for this trip.
