I was convinced this would be a great day when I was eating breakfast near Sunrift in the pre- dawn hours and simultaneously saw a shooting star and heard an elk bugling. Five GMSers took off from Siyeh Bend and quietly made their way up the trail a short distance. We intersected the climbers trail and made our way through the large park before ascending the gentle cliff bands. Autumnal color in the park is ramping up quickly, and a good snowfall on Mount Jackson hints that winter is not far off. The drainages through the cliff bands were pretty slick so we stepped carefully, but ascended without trouble. After the scree slog, we were at the saddle between Matahpi and GTTS, peering over at Sexton Glacier a couple thousand feet straight down. After a quick ascent from the saddle, we were on the summit under a stellar sky, GTTS front and center and an ocean of peaks towards and past Logan Pass. A quick trip back got us to the cars at a decent hour for a GMS event, where we had some Cherry Coke and cookies. A most excellent early fall day, with some new faces for me, which is nice to see. If these are the caliber of people joining, GMS will be in good hands in the future.
